In meditation, we're taking time to observe the mind. Sitting comfortably, free from distraction or disturbance. There's at least the opportunity for focused attention. But when we're out and about engaged in the world, it's a little more challenging to witness the coming and going of thoughts in the mind. So sometimes it's necessary to pay attention to the body and to our speech, rather than the mind itself. For example, have you ever slammed a door or done something clumsy and only realized afterwards that your mind was distracted or frustrated at the time. In this situation, the body reflects the mind just as the mind reflects the body. And in just the same way, awareness of speech can also provide a window to the mind. For example, if we find ourselves saying things that make ourselves or others feel uncomfortable, then this is just another opportunity to catch ourselves.
