We all have different ways of coping with stress. Sometimes sitting still with our thoughts can be a huge help. But other times being still just isn't the answer. Sometimes we have to get up and move. We all have a mind-body connection. We can carry tension around with us wherever we go. That's why sometimes I like to use movement as a way of releasing it. And it doesn't have to be a run or yoga class, it can be so much simpler than that. Repetitive, mindful movements can really help. Those kinds of movements that are so rhythmic, they become meditative. They get our minds back to a state of calm, and give our bodies a chance to reset. So, let's try some mindful movement today as a way of releasing stress. You may notice a huge difference in how you feel, and it may be something you can incorporate into your daily routine. The key to mindful movement is paying attention to your body, noticing the movement and sensations flowing through you. And when you notice your thoughts, don't judge them. Allow yourself to be exactly as you are in motion. As always, our bodies are unique to us, so only you know what's best for you. Modify anything I say to work for you and your abilities. Start by finding yourself in a comfortable position with both feet on the ground. This exercise is best done if you have some space around you to stretch out if you need. Take a deep breath in, and out. Softly close your eyes. Notice first your feet on the ground. Notice how the weight is distributed, what the sensations are there. And take another deep breath in, and out. Move your attention up from your feet to your arms. Notice how your shoulders feel. And traveling down with your focus past the biceps, to the elbows, the wrists, and finally to the hands. Press them together. Hold for three seconds, and then let them go. Notice all the sensations you feel in your hands. Now we're going to get into some movement for our whole body. Start to move your arms in a soft, swinging motion. Not in a way that forces anything, just in a way that feels good. It's up to you how you do it. See what sensations you notice as you swing them. Keep swinging your arms, seeing if you can make the movement follow a rhythm. Back and forth, or side to side, whatever you want. See if by following this rhythm you can ease your mind. Just moving with the flow. And now, see if you can extend those movements to another part of your body. Maybe your hips can swing a little bit. Again, not forcing anything, just moving the body in a rhythm. Maybe you add in a hand motion, or swing your torso too. Add something else to this movement that feels good. Let's kick it up a notch entirely...
