Better mental health starts with Headspace

(mellow music) Headspace Studios. Hey, my name is Nika, and welcome to "Radio Headspace" and to Tuesday. I'm a co-chair at Headspace, and one of my specialties is anger, which is exactly what this week is all about. And today I have something very interesting for you. So as I was scrolling through one of my many streaming services, I came across a reality TV show that I'd never seen before. So I decided I wanted to give it a look. And of course, I was not disappointed by the drama that ensued. There were shenanigans abound. But one of the cast members really stood out to me because he seemed irritated, annoyed, and frustrated at someone for most of the entire episode. And I noticed that he was experiencing what I like to call chronic anger, which is so much more complicated to deal with than the show actually portrayed, because in general, anger is more complicated than many people think. There are actually four different types of anger that we're gonna dig into today. And by understanding each of these, you can hopefully better understand how you're feeling and figure out the help that you may need. So let's get into it. So the four types of anger are normal, explosive, chronic, and bitter. So normal anger is pretty much what it sounds, right? It's when someone essentially has what we call low frequency, so they don't get angry very often. The duration of it is very short, and it is a low intensity, right? So you're not exploding over, you know, all over the place. And again, I just want to reiterate or just state the fact that it's okay that you have normal anger, right? It's not explosive. It doesn't impact your relationships in a negative way. You're just expressing yourself and saying like, this is uncomfortable to me and this is how I'm feeling. So the next type of anger we're gonna talk about is explosive anger. It does not happen that often. And then the direction is really short, right? But the intensity is off the charts. So I want you to think about Ron Swanson from "Parks and Rec". He might throw a printer out of the window. You might've seen that episode, and then after that, he just quickly gets back to work. This type of anger can really impact your relationships, but there are some practical techniques that you can use to actually deal with and reduce that explosive anger. One of the first things I would do is to ask you to separate out what situations cause you to become angry. And what I've learned is when people, I begin to just identify, just notice like, oh, it is always the same thing, right? The frequency of that explosive anger begins to decrease. So let's get into chronic anger. Now, this type of anger is high frequency, long duration and high intensity. Remember that reality show cast member I talked...
