Better mental health starts with Headspace

Headspace Studios. Hey there, everybody. My name is Kessonga, and welcome to Radio Headspace. It's Thursday. The week has truly flown by. Today we're gonna talk about burnout. It's a phenomenon that has plagued many of us, especially in today's fast-paced, hyperconnected world. But fear not, for in the midst of burnout, there lies an opportunity for renewal and transformation. So I'm gonna talk a little bit about that also. But first, let's define burnout. Burnout is not simply just feeling tired or stressed. Its formal definition is a state of emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion caused by prolonged stress and overwork. It may also be difficult to recognize or diagnose because we may be in positions where we feel like we have to keep going, like when parenting or a demanding job. Burnout can manifest itself in various ways, from feelings of irritability, cynicism, and detachment, and also physical symptoms, such as headaches, fatigue, and insomnia. A good way to determine if you're experiencing burnout is to simply ask yourself a couple of specific questions. Do you find yourself feeling depleted and drained even after a full night's sleep? Are you experiencing irritability, cynicism, or a lack of motivation in your work or personal life? These may be signs that burnout is actually present. I recently recognized this within myself. I was fully aware of it, and when I did some digging as to why I was feeling this way, I realized it was due to my mother. So I may or may not have mentioned that my mother is dealing with vascular dementia. It's been progressively getting more advanced over the past few years, and it's been very difficult for me to handle. Over the holidays when we visited my sister's house and was actually in real life presence with my mother, it was kinda like the straw that broke the camel's back. Seeing her condition in person, it was just very hard to handle. I remember I was crying every day for the first week back from the new year. And then, like I said, I was irritable and I had a very difficult time getting motivated with work. I was emotionally burned out. Remembering that burnout can be emotional or physical, or a bit of both at times. But the good news is that burnout is not inevitable, and there are ways to prevent it and to also manage it. One of the most powerful tools in our arsenal is, yep, you guessed it, mindfulness. The practice of cultivating awareness and presence in the present moment, it can be a game changer. When we get caught up in the spin cycle of stress and busyness, it's so easy to lose touch with ourselves and also with our needs. What mindfulness does is it...
