Better mental health starts with Headspace

(soft music) Headspace Studio. (relaxing music) Hi friends, it's Rosie, here. Welcome to Radio Headspace, and to Tuesday. Have you ever been in an Uber or at the gym, and suddenly a song comes on that transports you back to your youth? Or maybe it's not even music. Sometimes, it's just a sound. For me, when I hear the sound of hummingbirds zooming by, it instantly takes me back to those hot days in SoCal when I was a kid. It's amazing how these sensory triggers can bring back a flood of memories. This is what we call nostalgia. And I think it's a truly beautiful thing. Music, in particular, is such a powerful way for us to tap into those memories and reconnect with our past. Today, let's dive into this incredible feeling of nostalgia and explore how it can positively impact our wellbeing. I recently read an article that got me thinking about the true power of nostalgia. Originally coined in the 17th century, nostalgia described the homesickness felt by soldiers. Fast forward to today, scientists have redefined nostalgia as the sentimental longing for the past. Studies highlighting its impact on mental health have been analyzed and debated by scholars and the general public. According to some, indulging in nostalgia may boost your mood, increase social connectedness, and even provide existential meaning. However, it's important to remember that while nostalgia can be a source of joy for many, for others, it may bring in feelings of sadness or loss. For me, recognizing and respecting this duality is key to experiencing retro nostalgia in a healthy, inclusive way. Nostalgia is more than just a sentimental longing. It can serve as a powerful tool for enhancing our wellbeing. By engaging with our past mindfully, we can find joy, meaning and a deeper sense of connection in our lives. One of my fondest memories from the '80s is listening to mixtapes with my friends. We would spend hours curating the perfect playlist, recording songs from the radio, and sharing our creations with each other. I remember the anticipation of sitting by the radio, patiently waiting between commercials for those first notes of a favorite song to start playing, so I could hit the record button. There was a truly powerful tactile experience in doing this. The act of pressing those buttons and hearing the satisfying click as the cassettes began to spin made the whole process feel so hands-on and personal. Somehow, it made me appreciate these cassette tapes even more because I had some small part in their creation. These mixed tapes were more than just music. They were expressions of our identities and emotions. Each tape was a handcrafted time capsule, filled with songs that marked specific moments and memories in our lives. There was something magical about that, waiting for your favorite song to play on the radio and capturing it at the right moment. It felt like catching lightning in a bottle. And every time you played...
