I wanted to do this conversation 'cause I wanted to have it in video for the future, and I'm really proud of our Japanese heritage. I know you don't like being on camera. No, I don't, but... But I appreciate it. To celebrate and honor Asian Pacific islander month... Headspace invited three pairs of... Intergenerational family members to sit down... And have an open conversation on... Identity, mental health... And support weaving our families and communities. (upbeat music) 3A, Take 2, Common mark. Hi, my name is Nick Greenwood Hargrove. This is my dad, Chris Greenwood, and I've known him my whole Life. Hi, my name is Emily Lou, and this is Chilin Chang. She's like a mother to me, and I've known her for about 20 years. Hi, I'm Chelsea Coe and this is my mom, Keiko Coe. You've known me for 32 years. My experience being an Asian American has been a lot of unawareness until pretty recently. As I've gotten older and where I'm at now, I feel this pull to connect. I think growing up with you and your household, I had a clear direct connection of a very close tie to your culture. Growing up in a very disciplined, structured family, we don't talk about our emotion. The most important thing as a child is to make my family proud. So I never had my own identity. Never know what "me" is growing up. I came to United States and never even thought about, "I'm different from anybody." Then, one day somebody tell you, "You're not American." And then I was like, "But, I am." You know? Like, America is like my adopted country. So, it's like, I identify as Japanese, but this is my country too. I don't think I realized it as an experience as a whole, but I do remember being young and asking you, "What do I tell people when they ask me, what am I?" 'Cause I would get people who are confused. Even fellow Filipinos who didn't understand what I was. All my life I'm always questioned. "What are you?" "What are you?" You know, when I get that question it's, "I'm just Chris Greenwood." We have seen people in the family who have dealt with mental health issues and haven't gotten help. And that's hard because of the stigma, you know? On that side that they didn't want to. So I think we know the effects of not taking care of your mental health, what that can do to you. We never even talk about that part of thing in my country when I was growing up. I think it's an issue and topic that need to bring up in the open and talk about it. Otherwise it's not healthy. That's why I was surprised when you went to the meditation retreat on your own volition. Yeah, that was good. Needed it. I had actually printed out a list of therapists and had given it to my parents...
