Headspace Q&A: Morgan Jay
You woke up this morning and the first thing you thought was…
How much of a cold do I really have and will I have the energy to go rock climbing later today.
What is your typical morning ritual?
Big glass of water. Bowl of oatmeal with blueberries and bananas and local honey to help with my allergies. Meditate. Send out some emails. Carpe diem.
What keeps you up at night?
Knowing I have to be up early in the morning.
What advice would you give someone sitting down to meditate for the first time?
If you feel like the moment you close your eyes your mind starts to explode with thoughts, don't judge yourself and just power through. Don't "expect" to be some guru. This is very much about the journey and not the destination.
When and where do you like to meditate?
In my car before a gig. I park outside the venue and tell the booker, “Hey I’m gonna be in my car for the next 20-30 minutes… let me know if you need me.” Just do a Single unguided meditation.
How does your mind feel before you meditate?
Unfocused.
How does it feel after?
Focused.
What’s your favorite Headspace pack?
Headspace Pro 5. There’s this idea of “this”, only “this” happening in front of you. A lot of people tell you to “live in a moment”, but sometimes there’s a way someone says something that just resonates more with you. For me, it connected. It says, "imagine you’re walking down the street, and you’ve never been there before—you’re finding a way to try to change your perception of things. You have the power to change the way you look at a lot of things."
What has meditation helped you with the most?
Being present.
What’s the last thing that made you laugh out loud?
"Silicon Valley" and "Rick & Morty" consistently make me laugh.
What’s the kindest thing someone did for you this week?
Someone made me very tasty soup. This soup-maker is very enthusiastic about the soup-making process, which makes for really great soup. It involves yogurt.
Who or what is the current love of your life?
Performing.
Have you ever experienced a life changing moment?
Recently? Not really. But my father died when I was six and I imagine that had some long lasting effects.
What is the most important lesson life has taught you?
Don't take things personally. A lot of times it has nothing to do with you.
