Pushing through? How Headspace flicked a switch.
Have you ever gone through a tough period you thought was a hill then later looked back and saw the mountain? This happened to me not that long ago. In my mind I was doing what I thought was a really good job of adapting. My mind kept telling me to work harder, push harder and keep going. Seriously, I was managing to travel between time zones and still get it all done. People were exhausted looking at me!
When Headspace was introduced to me by a good friend, I was definitely ready for change. In the marvel of hindsight, I now see things more clearly and can identify that I was in an amplified stress state…pushing through. I realize now that our bodies are really amazing at keeping us going for survival, and we don’t always notice stress happening. With a background in Nutritional Medicine, my understanding of stress and the adrenals was about nutrition, a good diet and taking some extra B vitamins. Mindset was something I understood as important, but looking back it wasn’t until my own experience of getting out of balance that this concept really hit home. The thing about high achievers is, the need to achieve puts us into another gear. We can mentally override stress signs, caught up in the adrenaline of tension. Our culture also reinforces this with a "soldier on" mentality. You probably know this kind of person at work, the last one in the office, comes in even when they’re sick. The adrenal push can only last so long, though, then people burnout and wonder what happened. Over the years I’ve come to appreciate the mind and body connection, and the importance of checking in with the body signs. Irritability, mood changes and disturbed sleep are all something to listen to. The HPA (Hypothalamus-Pituitary-Adrenal) Axis (think brain-chemicals-body) regulates our stress response. It’s all connected and for good reason. Fortunately I was shown Headspace by a friend at the right time, and the program blew me away with such a brilliant user experience. Being into yoga and natural health I had dabbled in meditation, but never had anything stick as a regular practice. It was always hard to sit still, and I kind of dreaded having to do it. It took too much willpower. With Headspace I’ve never had that resistance. From day one it was easy to approach, just 10 minutes to start, no pressure. The impact it’s had on my personal life is huge; I’ve learned to stay connected to the intuitive feelings in my body. I now have a consistent daily practice that I look forward to! It’s become part of the routine; eat, sleep, exercise and meditate. Having something work so well is such a blessing and I am so grateful to have been given this tool. I have now created an Adrenal Restoration System which I use to teach people about creating a positive relationship with stress. I’ve integrated the mindset techniques and research I’ve studied with nutrition and health science. For me, recommending Headspace to clients and friends is like giving them a big loving hug, and is a foundational part of my integrated health philosophy. Lots of love and gratitude, Sita Huber BHSc (Nutritional Medicine)
